Acronym List

The Self-Determination Program (SDP) has its own special language. It can be confusing at first, but this list of acronyms will help you understand what people are talking about. Acronyms are short forms of longer words or phrases.

Here is a list of common acronyms used in the Regional Center and SDP. We’ve added highlights of ones used in the Self-Determination Program. Keep this list handy — it can make meetings and forms much easier to understand!

Department of Developmental Services Self-Determination Page

The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) contracts the California’s 21 regional centers. This website was made by DDS to help people learn about the Self-Determination Program (SDP). It has resources for people who want to join or are already in the program, and for their support team. If you want to join SDP, contact your regional center to get started.

Self-Determination Program Ombudsperson Office

The Office of the Self-Determination Program Ombudsperson is part of DDS but works independently to help people in the Self-Determination Program (SDP).

They:

  • Give information and assistance
  • Help resolve disagreements
  • Investigate complaints regarding the implementation of the SDP
  • Recommend changes to DDS and the Legislature

They do not take sides, represent you in appeals, or change court or hearing decisions.

SDP Local Volunteer Advisory Committee

Every regional center has a SDP Local Volunteer Advisory Committee (LVAC). They are sometimes called Self-Determination Advisory Committee (SDAC). The committee is responsible for providing oversight of the regional center’s program. They are provided funds annually that they can spend to promote the program. These committees are a great place to meet others who are in the SDP program. Find yours here:

Disability Rights California

If you feel that your rights have been violated. Disability Rights California is the agency designated under federal law to protect and advocate for the rights of Californians with disabilities. If you need assistance go here:

SDP Provider Network

You are not required to use vendored services in the Self-Determination Program. But sometimes it helps to know who is already working with SDP participants.
